Biography
Gautamiputra Satakarni was the most powerful ruler of the Satavahana dynasty. His mother was Gautami Balashri, after whom he was named (Gautamiputra = "son of Gautami"). He revived the Satavahana fortunes by defeating the Western Kshatrapas (Saka rulers) under Nahapana, reconquering territories in Malwa, Gujarat, and Konkan. His empire stretched from coast to coast across the Deccan. The Nashik Prashasti inscription by his mother depicts him as a heroic, just, and benevolent ruler who crushed the pride of the Kshatriyas and restored the glory of the Satavahanas.
